The government of Ogun State told people who live in areas that get very wet when it rains to move to a safer place before the rainy season starts.

The environment chief, Mr. (name), of the state. Ola Oresanya talked about what to do during floods at the 2024 State Flood Alert in Abeokuta with the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority.

Oresanya said there will be a lot of rain for 239 days and it will affect 16 out of 20 areas in the state. It’s based on predictions from NIMET and NIHSA.

Oresanya also said that four areas in Imeko-Afon, Odeda, Abeokuta North and Abeokuta South would have the least amount of rain.

The commissioner said people who live on hills might see soil washing away because water is moving fast. But the government is getting ready to help reduce the damage from the rain. So, people should stay calm.

“You need to either move away from the area or raise your house. You might need to repair or lift your house if you want to stay in that area. ” Every year, we discuss moving to a new place. Moving to a new place is hard. If you have to leave those places, be sure to put your electronics and furniture up high so they don’t get ruined.

“When we discuss moving and raising things, it will mostly focus on this area. ” People living in the wetlands of the state should get ready for the water level to rise because we will have a lockdown in place during this time.

“So, people who live in the hilly areas will experience erosion because the water will flow quickly down the hills around Ilaro and some areas in Ota. ” We will have erosion along with this flooding.

“We will see the effects in the wetland areas of the state, especially in the southern parts. These areas are mostly flat and low-lying, and are the border towns between Lagos and Ogun State,” he said.

Oresanya also said that the state government plans to help with the flooding problem by building 2,975. 6m of drainage channels, small bridges, and cleaning 56. 150m of river in the state.

“We will be working on building drainage channels and culverts at Wesley Primary School in Ijebu-Ode. We will also fix a broken culvert at Saje Dumpsite road in Apakila (Abeokuta), Igbosoro (Ogijo, Sagamu), and Imasai. Additionally, we will clean out rivers and streams at Yemile (Ijebu-Ode), Sensen river (Sagamu), Onibuku (Ota), Odo-funfun (Oja-Odan), Opa Aro (Isheri), and Sokori river. We will also be cleaning out drainage channels in Abeokuta, Ifo, Ijebu-Ode, Sagamu, Ilaro, and Ota. ”

The commissioner said that it rains a lot near the coast for about 250 to 292 days, and inland for about 200 to 250 days. He told farmers to start planting their crops.

He told fish farmers to catch fish before it rains a lot in July. He also told chicken farmers not to have too many chickens during the same time, which started two months ago.

He also asked people in the state to get a “drainage permit” before building their drainpipes.

He said this will make sure that drains are at the right height for water to flow properly. It will also stop people from building on flood plains and wetlands by mistake when it’s not raining.
